Listen to the Spirit

Listen to the Spirit

Message Aim: Virlina District Conference (Theme: Listen to the Spirit)

Sermon Title:   Listen to the Spirit

 Scripture:  Mark 5:21-36

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.   A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”  31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

 Message Synopsis:

We are introduced to a man in our scripture by the name of JAIRUS. He was a religious leader who had a DAUGHTER sick in bed who was dying! What do you do when you are at the end of your rope? He has heard about Jesus in the Synagogues that had the POWER TO HEAL. Jairus didn’t know if Jesus would help him, all he knew was that his daughter was sick and he needed help. Listen to the Spirit. Jairus went looking for Jesus. He fell at the feet of Jesus and began to plead: my little girl is sick and close to death, come with me to my home, help me! It is this man’s FAITH that compelled Jesus to follow.

INTERRUPTED – As He and Jairus and the disciples were making their way through the multitude, a woman came up behind Jesus and secretly touched the hem of His garment. This was a TOUCH OF FAITH. Jesus turns and asks, “WHO TOUCHED ME?” His disciples said to Him, “Lord, You see this huge crowd of people. Everyone is touching You!” But Jesus said, “This touch is different, because I felt healing power go out of Me.” Listen to the Spirit. Interruptions in life help us to refocus attention on God and take sights off ourselves and focus on God’s SUFFICIENCY.  Interruptions are not sent to harm us but to help us. This woman was healed because of her Faith.

As Jesus is talking with the woman, messengers come from Jairus’ house to tell him that his DAUGHTER HAD DIED – so there is no reason to “trouble” the Master any further. Jesus hears what the messengers relayed and – Immediately He turns to this now Shocked Father and says to him, “Be not afraid; only believe.” Listen to the Spirit. As far as Jesus was concerned, death was no greater a challenge than sickness. He knew that if He had the power to RESTORE HEALTH, He had the power to RESTORE LIFE. That is why He told Jairus not to panic.

I can hear Jesus asking us this morning –– Do you Trust Me Enough to Listen to the Spirit? Do we allow the Word of God to immediately PENETRATE our Heart when things Go from Bad to Worse? I can hear Jesus saying this morning – Jairus, I heard the same report as you but– Do you Trust Me Enough to Listen to the Spirit?

The same is true with us.  When the Lord tells us not to be afraid, not to panic, He is not saying that the negative situations we are facing are not real.  They are real, just as the situation of Jairus’ daughter was real. Jesus went right on towards Jairus’ house just as He had been doing before the bad report came. Jesus is saying– Do you Trust Me Enough to Listen to the Spirit? Jesus can and will make a way out of no way.

Listen to the Spirit!
